"The Trail of the Sioux" 46 p. -- Summary: In Julesburg, the banker interprets Red and McClure's story of how Blueberry buried the payroll as theft, while on the way to the Union Pacific camp Blueberry himself is captured by Steelfingers and the Indians, and forced to lead them to the money. Blueberry goes along with this figuring it will buy Dodge about a week while he leads them around. Meanwhile Red and McClure get the idea of riding out of town to send a fake telegraph message saying that General Allister's troops are arriving from Kansas in two days. Both the army and the Indians believe it, and the commander at Julesburg sends his few men toward Dodge's camp, expecting more soldiers soon. That news, along with Blueberry's promise of a serious peace conference, causes the Indians to lift the siege and withdraw. Blueberry goes alone to dig up the money, intending to take it to the camp, but Steelfingers catches him, knocks him out and puts a few thousand dollars in Blueberry's shirt. When the banker arrives with Red and McClure, Blueberry is put under arrest. Steelfingers drugs his men and takes the money for himself, shooting the last one. The Indians hear the shot and finish off Steelfingers, and a lynch mob gathers wanting to kill Blueberry for taking the payroll. General Dodge arrives just in time, and takes Blueberry with him to the treaty talks. Sitting Bull has Steelfingers' metal hand on a necklace, and returns the payroll, so Blueberry is cleared. Dodge says he'll recommend the treaty be signed, and the Indians agree to cease hostilities based on Blueberry's word of honor. The treaty still has to be cleared with General Allister, who outranks Dodge, and Dodge sends a message to Allister, carried by Blueberry, strongly urging peace. Allister refuses, because he needs a victory to help his career, and announces plans to attack the Indian villages while the Indian men are out hunting in preparation for winter. So that he won't interfere, Blueberry is transferred to Allister's command and locked up. Red and McClure join the unit as muleskinners to be near him.

"General Golden Mane" 48 p. -- Summary: General Allister, who is called "Golden Mane" by the Indians, heads through the snow to find the Sioux and Cheyenne villages he plans to massacre. An accidental explosion warns the Cheyenne women and children in time for many of them to escape across a frozen river, and in the chase Allister falls through the ice and is rescued by Blueberry. Allister returns to burn the abandoned village, and other Indians see the smoke and are warned. Blueberry warns Allister that Indians are coming, and Allister sends Blueberry with the muleskinners and the wounded to hold them off, hoping in that way to get rid of Blueberry. Blueberry sends Red and McClure out to dynamite the ice along the river, then makes his stand at a ford. Soon he is knocked unconscious by a tomahawk, and the rest of his men are killed. Blueberry is about to be scalped when McClure comes back from the dynamite job and saves him, and they escape with Indians in pursuit. Blueberry has McClure lead them to where they can hear a mock battle that Blueberry stages, using McClure's leftover dynamite. Returning to Allister's camp, Blueberry is stripped of his rank when he points out that the Indians are massing for another attack. Blueberry has Red sneak out to ask General Dodge for reinforcements, since Allister refuses. The Indians attack in a series of small raids hoping to draw Allister's troops into an ambush, and finally Allister orders Blueberry to go with a small party with a lot of buglers, so the Indians will think it's the whole army and trigger the ambush. There were two ambushes, however, and the main army is also soon surrounded. At the last minute two hundred civilians with General Dodge appear and save the day for the main army. Then they hear a bugle in the distance and realize that Blueberry isn't dead. Indeed, Blueberry's unit is out of ammunition, but help arrives in time to save some of them. General Allister is shamed into granting Blueberry a leave for his bravery, but the two men promise to meet again.
