Gefährliche Rivalen

Gefährliche Rivalen. -- Bergisch Gladbach : Bastei-Verlag, 1972. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 26 cm. -- (Jerry Spring, der Mann aus Texas ; Nr. 1) -- Translation of: Jerry Spring 14: Les Broncos du Montana, by Jijé. -- Western genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.J5J41815 1972

Summary: Jerry Spring rides into Fort Sanders to accept a job hunting wild mustangs for the Army, at $100 per head. Another hunter named Jim Barret is at the meeting. The commanding officer, a Major, would like them to work together, because they need the horses in a hurry, but Barret says he works alone. Spring agrees and they divide the territory: Barret gets Montana and Spring gets Wyoming. Jerry sends a telegram to his friend Pancho in El Paso, and soon Pancho and his nephew Chico are on the way north to join the hunt. Before they meet Jerry, the two Mexicans come upon Jim Barret, who tries to hire them. When Pancho refuses the job, Barret shoots to startle their horses. Pancho abandons the bumbling saddletramp act he has been putting on and shoots Barret's hat off. Jerry Spring rides into Barret's camp with his revolver in action just then. Barret is angry when the three protagonists leave, but nobody is hurt. Up in Wyoming where the wild horses are, Jerry and Pancho soon learn that the Indians don't want anybody taking horses. Meanwhile Barret meets some Dakota Indians, gives them tobacco, and warns them that Jerry's coming to take their horses. The Dakotas ride out to meet Jerry and Pancho, and tell them to move on and do their hunting in Montana. They make camp to think it over, and Jerry goes hunting. Suddenly a puma attacks an Indian boy, Jerry kills the puma, and the boy runs away screaming. When Jerry returns to camp, Dakota Indians are there with a dinner invitation. It seems the screaming boy was the chief's son. Pancho, who is always hungry, is very happy about this, and Jerry hopes for a breakthrough in the mustang-hunting situation. At the Dakota village, Chief Red Feather ("Rote Feder") introduces his son Yunka and gives the white men the use of a tent. Pancho goes off by himself and talks to the Chief. The Chief and Pancho work out that since Pancho's skin is the same color as the Dakotas, it wouldn't be like helping palefaces get horses if they helped Pancho instead. So the next day Pancho puts on Indian clothing and goes out horse-hunting with Yellow Hand ("Gelbe Hand") and a party of Dakotas. However, when they find some mustangs, they're in Montana. Barret comes by and tries to hire them to drive the herd he has caught, and Pancho has to hide under a fur so Barret won't see his mustache and realize that his competitors are hunting in Montana. Barret offers one bottle of whiskey per horse, and he knows that the Dakotas don't mind helping palefaces catch horses as long as it's done across the state line in Montana. Because Pancho has fallen asleep under his fur and gives no sign when the Indians sit on him and explain the situation as a covert way of getting his advice, Barret's deal is accepted on the condition that Red Feather doesn't hear about it. Meanwhile Jerry gets worried and rides out with Chico to find the hunting party. We learn that Barret plans not to give the Indians any whiskey, and also that Pancho and Yellow Hand plan to steal all the horses in Barret's herd anyhow. Barret and his white helpers are all drunk when the Indians stampede the horses. The next day both Jerry, with Chico, and Barret, with his helper Skinny, are following the herd at a distance. Chico finds a colt by itself and bonds with it, when Barret rides up and grabs Chico. Chico yells, Jerry rushes in, and a fistfight starts. Jerry goes down and Jerry's horse Ruby runs at Barret, who shoots the horse. When Skinny sees this he shoots the gun out of Barret's hand and quits, because he won't work for a man who would shoot a horse. Pancho hears the shots and rides up, to be thoroughly criticized by Jerry for the mess they're in. Ruby isn't badly hurt, and Chico finds the colt which in the interim has found its mother. The next morning Yellow Hand arrives with a fresh horse for Jerry, by the name of Thundercloud ("Donnerwolke"), and the herd makes it to Wyoming and is corraled. One horse escapes and Jerry catches him on foot, Indian style. After several weeks of breaking and taming the horses, Jerry makes the nine-day ride back to Fort Sanders, to find Barret already there and claiming the horses for himself, since they were stolen from him in Montana. The next day Barret challenges Spring to a fistfight near a river. Barret pulls a hidden gun and Spring knocks him into the rapids, where he dies. Jerry Spring says the Dakotas will get Barret's portion of the money, though no explanation is given as to how possession or partial possession of the herd was decided.
