Summary: Englishman Mickey Loverose narrates his biography, beginning with his conception two days after the death of his father. Soon after Mickey's birth, his mother starts chasing men trying to uncover Mickey's real father, and she has to be locked up. As a little boy Mickey is raised by a stern governess, and allowed to see his mother only occasionally. His mother spends their visits reciting sexual exploits. In school Mickey is an outcast because he doesn't have a father, and eventually falls in with a deaf boy named Andrew Cottswold who is similarly ostracized. After school, the two young men set up a business providing albis for gentlemen who wish to have affairs. The business prospers, but Mickey is himself lonely. His is rich, witty, and handsome, and women pursue him, but he hasn't met the right girl. An antiquary sells him a magic ring that will reveal people's true thoughts, and soon the elimination of female prospects is even easier, until he meets Aspasie. Aspasie seems wonderfully innocent and loving, and soon a wedding is planned. The only problem is, every night she disappears in a mysterious carriage. The night before the wedding Mickey follows her in his "quietest racing car," and finds that she is the niece of the man who sold him the ring, and that it's a scam. Mickey takes ship for the continent, and from there goes to the Middle East. He buys a couple of women in the slave market, and rents a palace for an orgy. He adds more and more slaves. One night he finds an unfamiliar door in the palace, and in it are two mummies labelled "27" and "29." The servants deny any knowledge of the mummies. In town people are betting on him, and that night one of the women lets slip that they are counting the days since the orgy began. Next morning, on his 20th day, Mickey packs up and runs, finding out later that that put him in 8th place among the rich westerners so far entrapped. Next in India, Mickey learns about a dream goddess, and even gets a map to find her. In competition with an "incendiary Polish poet of lesbian love," he searches the jungle until he finds her in a ruined temple. She is a painting on canvas, but a clap of the hands brings her to ardent life, and two claps send her back to the canvas. This works nicely until one night he lets her stay off the canvas all night. She claps her own hands twice, and Mickey is in the canvas. A servant is sent to burn the canvas, but luckily the man claps his hands to catch a fly and Mickey is saved. Back in the house Mickey double-claps the goddess, already in bed with another man, and she flies to the canvas, which is still burning. Finally Mickey decides to create his own perfect woman. He chooses and supports the parents, and her name is Kotori. Mickey watches her grow, and provides the world's best tutors, and when she's seventeen she agrees to marry him. On the wedding night he discovers that she's a boy. The parents hadn't wanted to lose his seventeen years of extravagant subsidy. Mickey flees, but Kotori is in love and vows to follow him wherever he may go.
