Summary: Barney Barrows is a janitor for the Gotham Police
Department, when he is caught in an explosion of the "big
x-ray machine" he's mopping behind. Though he has
previously failed the examination to be a police officer,
he now gains an enlarged head and more brain power. He
deduces the secret identities of Batman and Robin, and
forces them to follow his orders while they look for the
Metals Mob, stealers of things like iridium, tantalum,
tungsten and "all those rare metals." It turns out the
Kyler Aluminum Co. is fencing the metals, and smuggling
them inside hollow bars of aluminum. Just as the gang is
caught, Barney collapses and his head shrinks back to
normal. He forgets the secret identities, and goes back to
mopping the floor. -- Data from Jon Ingersoll, via Grand

L'Enquête Corse

L'Enquête Corse / Pétillon. -- Paris : Albin Michel, 2000. -- 52 p. : col. ill. ; 32 cm. -- (Jack Palmer) -- Detective genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.P4E5 2000

Summary: Jack Palmer goes to Corsica looking for a man named Ange Leoni. His inquiries are met with silence on the first day, but in the morning he is kidnapped by a carload of men in black hoods. A vanload of police witnesses the kidnapping, and begins pursuit. By the time the police catch up there are three carloads of armed men in black hoods stopped on the road arguing about which faction is the true Corsican liberationists. The police arrest Jack Palmer to get him away from the militants. In short order two more police agencies arrive to claim Palmer as their prisoner, but finally they all give up and leave. That night nearly every building in the town is bombed, and the name of Leoni is involved. Jack Palmer still has no idea what's going on, and doesn't get much sleep because of the bombs. The next morning Palmer gets a tip about a cousin of Leoni's that might talk to him, and visits an upper class villa where he is mistaken for an insurance agent/racketeer by the owners. Even though they are "continentals," the homeowners try to impress Palmer with how much they love Corsica, and go so far as to have a copy of Asterix en Corse on their coffee table. Palmer is actually there to see their maid, Maria Leoni. When the racketeer Figoli arrives he is insulted to find a detective there and won't accept the protection money. Maria says she's from a different branch of the Leoni family, so Palmer and Figoli leave the continentals expecting to be bombed at any minute. An explosion does happen, but it's Figoli's car and another faction of the mob calls to say it's taking over his business, to the great relief of the continentals. Palmer goes to a local detective named Spadoni to get some help, and is given the name of a lawyer who can get a message to Ange Leoni. Going into a courtroom where a trial is in progress, Palmer finds the witness, lawyers, jury and judge all discussing the threatening letters they've received from both sides in the case. Figoli is called to testify, and then the court is evacuated for a bomb threat, and Palmer learns that Leoni has fired his lawyer. Presently, however, Palmer learns of a meeting of the factions, in an effort to make peace, at which a representative of Ange Leoni is to be in attendance. When Palmer arrives at the meeting with this information the participants are shocked to think Leoni might have a spy among them, and a gun battle breaks out. The investigation is stalled. Then an unknown shepherd accidentally burns down Leoni's hideout in the country and he returns to the city. Everybody hates him, but the rules of hospitality are such that each family has to take him in and protect him for a night. This gets old fast, and after ten days the factions meet again to discuss the Leoni problem. They decide to use Jack Palmer to trap Leoni. Palmer finally delivers the news of an inheritance from an uncle of Leoni's, and the police surround the house. Leoni negotiates a short prison term for himself and money for all the anti-colonialist factions. Soon the factions are fighting over the money, and all is back to normal.

mother in her laundry business during the long summer days.
Carlos, Senior, is preoccupied at work. He leaves his car
at work and walks home among regular people, ruminating
about poverty. He talks to his mother about his own son
living in poverty while he has more money than he can use,
and his mother won't hear it. The suggestion that they are
unhappy in a house that is too big for them is nonsense to
her. Carlos Senior accepts her judgement. School starts
again. Memín and Ernesto meet on the first day. Ricardo's
mother enrolls him in a private school, and Carlangas has
decided to drop out and help his mother, though his mother
doesn't know it. When Carlos's mother finds out she is very
unhappy and plans to enroll him anyway. When Ricardo tells
