Summary: An old man is telling the story to his grandchildren, and they've gotten to the point at which Bragon and his group are nearing the top of the steep peak called the Finger of Heaven. They are being attacked by a flock of birds. A damsel meets them at the top and, first being sure there are no wizards among them, helps them complete the climb. Her name is Kiskill, and she is immortal and in charge of the birds as long as she remains a virgin. She proclaims the mystery knight in his helmet to be the Chosen One, because he climbs up first. Then she takes them to the Guardian, who appears to be a little blind boy. He touches each of them and gives each a characterizing phrase. Bragon is honorable but mad. Bulrog is a tortured soul, and must grow. Roxanna he can't seem to perceive at all, but says he pities her blue furry, because it is unaware of the forces it serves. The mystery knight is excepted from the readings because he is the Chosen One. The Guardian takes Bragon, Bulrog and Roxanna aside to tell them the myth of the Time Bird, which is a story that explains alternating day and night. An archer shoots down a dark bird, which lays a light egg, and a light bird which lays a dark egg, over and over again. Meanwhile the knight of mystery learns from Kiskill where the Time Bird can be gotten, and Roxanna tries to run into the nest and get it. That doesn't work, so Kiskill takes the Chosen One into the nest, where he ends her virginity in exchange for the egg of the Time Bird. There is still a struggle, as she has lost control of the birds that attack them. They get out, and she has three lopwinds waiting. The five of them mount and start flying the egg to Mara, so she can use it to save their planet from the evil Ramor. Soon the lopwinds are tired, and they are attacked by Jivrains. The Jivrains are usually a peaceful tribe, but they are afflicted by a plague and are hungry for blood. The travelers make it to the retreat of the wizard prince of the Jivrain, whose name is Tharmin. He is singing his death song, because he has the plague too, but he helps them. Inside the retreat with all the mad Jivrains locked out, Roxanna starts to fail because her furry is also locked out. They retrieve the furry, and Bulrog gets bitten by a plague victim. Before they leave, Bragon cuts off Bulrog's bitten hand and cauterizes it, and Bulrog stays behind. There is only one day left to get the egg to Mara, so they start walking as fast as they can, but Roxanna can't keep up. Finally she falls behind out of sight, and when they go to look for her they find that Mara has come out to meet them, and Roxanna has found her. Before she gets the egg, Bragon wants Mara to reassure him that he is really the father of Roxanna. Mara says no, Roxanna doesn't have a father because she doesn't really exist. She's just a projection controlled by the blue furry, used to motivate Bragon into a successful quest. Bragon doesn't want to believe it, but Roxanna does go blank at this juncture. Mara says he should be happy, he's got some nice memories, but Bragon is not happy. Mara works on her spell, and they soon learn that instead of confining Ramor, she has merged with him to rule the world. She laughs an evil laugh, and then an arrow takes her in the chest and she falls into the river with a "splöf," and sinks with a noisome-looking "bloob! bloob! bloob!" The Guardian from the Finger of Heaven has followed them, and has restored the natural progression of time by protecting it from wizards. Roxanna becomes invisible and Bragon mourns, then takes up the furry. The riddler from the river, Fol of Dol, then pops up and grabs the egg (now white). He threatens to break it unless someone answers his riddle to produce a moral for the story. The Chosen One sees Bragon mourning and holding the furry, and thinks of his new relationship with Kiskill, and answers that the one passion that can free the soul is love. Good enough. The grandfather sends the children to bed, saying there might be more to the story another time. The grandfather, still mourning his wife, puts on the Chosen One's helmet and goes off on his lopwind to visit an old hermit friend.
