La Diligence

 La Diligence / dessins de Morris ; scénario de Goscinny. -- Neuilly-sur-Seine : Dargaud, 1968. -- 46 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (Lucky Luke) -- English translation titled The Stage Coach or The Stagecoach. -- Call no.: PN6747.M64L832 1968

Summary: Lucky Luke is asked to escort a stagecoach with a big gold shipment from Denver to San Francisco. The driver is Hank Bully. The passengers are Scat Thumbs, a gambler often seen in tar and feathers; Jeremiah Fallings, a photographer; Digger Stubble, a prospector; Sinclair Rawler, a sky-pilot; Arabella Flimsy, and her diminutive accountant husband Oliver. They are beset by bandits. They eat bacon and beans. They push the stagecoach over a landslide. They eat bacon and beans. They are captured by Indians. They get away. Lucky Luke shoots eight prairie chickens with one shot to supplement the bacon and beans, and while he's hunting they are beset by bandits. The preacher turns out to be a phony, and they turn him over to the police in Salt Lake City. The final bandit between Carson City and Sacramento is Black Bart, who successfully gets them to open the strongbox. It turns out to be full of rocks. Their trip was a decoy, the real strongbox arrived by another stage, and the company is happy. At a banquet in Lucky Luke's honor, Wells Fargo serves bacon and bean flavored ice cream.

Summary: Interview, in which Morris talks about
collaborating with Goscinny. He compares Goscinny's writing
of Lucky Luke to his own, says he hates puns and deletes
them from Goscinny's scripts, but that Goscinny only puts
them in to tease him. Morris says that Hergé's Tintin in
the Land of the Soviets was important to him in choosing
comics as his career. He speaks briefly of censorship,
merchandising, animation, stage adaptation, and film
adaptation of Lucky Luke. La Diligence, he says, is a
parody of the film Stagecoach. Morris describes his way of
depicting motion, and a gangster strip called Fred le
Savant, that he did briefly with Goscinny. Includes two
photographs of Morris, and a sample page of Fred le Savant.
