Dies Irae

Dies Irae / Milo Manara ; translated by Elizabeth Bell. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1990. -- 88 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The African Adventures of Giuseppe Bergman ; pt. 2) -- "Adults only". -- Translation of: Jour de Colère. -- Adventure story genre. -- Call no.: PN6767.M36J613 1990

Chapter 1: "The Crocodile-Men" p. 3-19. -- Summary: A little girl named Chloe begins the narration, describing herself and her tutor. Chloe takes us to Kenya, where she meets Giuseppe Bergman and asks him if he is a crocodile-man. She invites him to a Masai party, but he leaves with the truck and soon picks up two hitchhikers. The man, named Red, is mean and disagreeable, and is part of a punk rock group. The woman seems unusually submissive to him. The truck runs into an elephant, which chases Bergman into a Masai trap which takes him hours to get out of. When he returns to the wrecked truck, Red says he has a Jeep in the Masai village that he can't go back for himself. Before he can go for the Jeep, the woman falls into quicksand. Red writes a song about it while Giuseppe rescues her, then they watch from the shore while Giuseppe tries to rescue himself and a little monkey that chances by.

Chapter 2: "Word of Honor" p. 20-36 -- Summary: Giuseppe Bergman gets out of the quicksand, and asks the woman why she stays with Red. She'd rather not tell the story, so Red starts whipping her and Giuseppe tackles Red. Her story is about a locker room full of boys after a game. Bergman goes for the Jeep in the village, and it won't start and he is surrounded by warriors. He assumes they are cannibals and hops in a pot on the fire to save time. A woman beats him with a broom for getting in her soup with his shoes on. He learns that two cars had come and kidnapped a little girl from their village, fleeing so fast that they left the Jeep behind. Since he knew about the Jeep they figure he must be connected. Giuseppe promises to find the kidnapped girl and bring her back, so they let him go, but follow him. Red claims he doesn't know, but that his partners at the Hotel Virgoberg will know what to do. Giusseppe insists on knowing what happened to the girl, so Red knocks him unconscious and makes the woman change clothes with him. He cuts her hair short and makes her run away so the Masai will follow her. When Giuseppe wakes up he is naked and alone, so he puts on the woman's dress and starts walking across the plains. He is soon hit by several cars. HP drops by with a bunch of camel herders, and says he'll help him get part way to the Hotel Virgoberg, which is on the Mounts of the Moon.

Chapter 3: "Who Am I?" p. 37-54. -- Summary: HP tells Bergman he'll have to leave the camel caravan before dark, because since he's wearing a dress the men will be after his virtue. He should go visit a friend named Seven, who lives nearby and has no arms. Once Seven had been saved from a helicopter crash by pygmies. The helicopter also had crates of books in it, and Seven spent nine years reading aloud to the pygmies. Their chief's favorite book was called The Legend of Virgoberg Castle, and HP therefore recommends Seven as an information source on the topic of Virgoberg. The rest of the tribe's favorite book was the Dublin telephone directory. On the way Bergman runs into the man who had the foot-high woman in a bag in the previous volume, and this time he gives Bergman a flying carpet. While he's trying to get the carpet to fly, the woman with his clothes turns up on the other side of the river, looking for Red. Bergman demands his clothes back, but instead the narrator changes their bodies within their clothes, first to identical androgyny and then to a complete switch. The male leaves for Seven's place, and the female keeps looking for Red. Seven's wife Isabella greets Bergman, and tells him that a virgin was walled up in the foundation when Virgoberg was built, and that she has her husband's notes about it. Isabella tells Giuseppe that Seven isn't home, but actually she has him tied to the wall by a rope on his genitals in the other room.

Chapter 4: "The Virgin in the Walls" p. 55-68. -- Summary: Isabella at first demands payment for the story, but before long the notes disappear and Bergman hears Seven's voice from the next room. A long time ago an alchemist from Nuremberg arrived in the Masai country with his daughter. We recognize the daughter as Chloe, the overall narrator of this volume, and the alchemist as the man she called her tutor. He comes upon a mountain and wants to build a castle on it, but it's too unstable. The only way to make it work would be to wall a living virgin up in the foundation, they say, so he sticks his daughter in and the architecture works beautifully. If she loses her virginity, however, the whole thing will fall into an abyss, and that will be the day of wrath. At midnight every full moon, everybody has to scream as loud as they can to keep the virgin's voice from being heard. Back at the river Bergman finds a man about to commit suicide because his family was killed by his recreational equipment. A canoe comes by and though they wonder why he just doesn't use the flying carpet under his arm, the occupants give him a ride to the Hotel Virgoberg.

Chapter 5: "One Minute to Midnight" p. 69-88. -- Summary: In the Hotel Virgoberg, the monkey from the quicksand takes Giuseppe Bergman's hand and leads him to a wizard who has made a golem out of human feces. It works, but it smells bad. The wizard's goal is to figure out what the virgin is saying at midnight of the full moon, which is this very night. It's almost midnight, and the punk rock concert is about to start, which will encourage the screaming, which will drown out the virgin's voice. Bergman goes on stage asking them about the kidnapped Masai girl, and gets into a fistfight. At midnight the screaming starts even without the band, and the place is surrounded by Masai warriors looking in the windows. The wizard figures out that the virgin is saying "merde," ("shit"), and this activates the golem. The monkey leads Bergman into the foundation. The golem attacks and pushes him through a wall to where the virgin Chloe is kneeling at the alchemist's grave. He tries to seduce her, saying there's no truth to the legend about the castle falling down, when the golem pops up out of the grave. Chloe gives Bergman a push out of the frame, which lands him at a distance from the hotel, and the monkey brings his flying carpet to him. The hotel collapses, and HP shows up to complain about the endings of his stories. HP flies off on the carpet, and Bergman sees a noisy line of elephants going by, and the end of the line is the end of the story.
