Dawn of the Living Dead

Dawn of the Living Dead / Tiziano Sclavi, script ; Angelo Stano, art ; translation, Bojana Dozic ; dialogue, Reed Chaval. -- Milwaukie, OR: Dark Horse Press, 1999. -- 100 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. -- (Dylan Dog ; 1) -- Call no.: PN6768.D913 1999 no. 1

Summary: Sybil Browning is attacked by her dead husband, and stabs him in the eye with scissors, stopping his attack. A week later, out on bail, she visits Dylan Dog to ask for help proving she's innocent of murder. She first meets Felix, Dylan Dog's assistant, whose bad jokes almost chase her away. Her husband had been doing research in Scotland with another scientist called Xabaras, which name Dog figures is an anagram of Abraxas, or the Devil. The autopsy of the dead husband is scheduled for that day. The doctor performing it finds an unknown virus which animates the rest of the cadavers in the morgue. Xabaras arrives, shoots all the zombies in the head, and burns the building down. On the train to Scotland the next day, Xabaras recognizes Dog's clarinet playing and introduces himself to Dylan, Sybil, and Felix. Xabaras explains what happened to Sybil's husband, and the three pretend to believe him and leave the train, jumping on again at the last minute. They arrive at Inverness without money to rent a car, and have to take bicycles to the village of Undead. Dylan Dog talks to Abraxas in his laboratory, and Abraxas explains his goal (an immortal human race under his control) and his virus (harmless to the living but contagious to the dead). Then Abraxas assigns his legion of zombies the task of killing Dylan. Felix and Sybil get involved but soon they are outnumbered and have to flee. After a series of standoffs Abraxas brings the three back to his house. As a last request, Dylan asks permission to play his clarinet. The case is rigged to explode, and it does, taking the whole house with it. The zombies stop attacking and head back to their graves. Abraxas says he will return, and the story ends with Dylan and Sybil sharing a bed.
