Cuban Agents.
   The Killer Omnibus. Volume two / written by Matz ;
illustrated by Luc Jacamon. -- Los Angeles, California :
   Archaia, 2014. -- 286 p. : col. ill. ; 27 cm. -- Originally
published in France in five volumes from 1998 to 2003. --
French series title: Le Tueur. -- Contents: 6. Modus
Vivendi ; 7. Ordinary Mortals ; 8. The Natural Order of
Things ; 9. Unfair Competition ; 10. Putting Your Heart In
It. -- Summary (from OCLC): The Killer finds himself drawn
deeper into international intrigue between Cuba, Venezuela,
and the United States, with oil revenues and political
independence the stakes. A professional. A man of few
scruples, nerves of steel, and a steady trigger finger. A
man whose crimes might be catching up with him. A man on
the verge of cracking. Archaia presents The Killer, a
hardboiled, noir series chronicling one man's journey
through some seriously bad mojo. After his misadventures in
Venezuela, our Killer retires to Mexico, but his Colombian
cartel friend Mariano and the Cuban agent Katia are not far
behind. Soon he finds himself drawn back into the great
geopolitical game between Cuba, Venezuela, and the United
States, with oil revenues and political independence the
stakes. Even when he finds himself in unusual territory as
the shadow owner of an oil company developing Cuba's
off-shore deposits, the need for his usual skill-set is
never far away. -- Spy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.J25T8613

Cuban Catholic Families.
Spit and Passion / written and illustrated by Cristy C.
   Road. -- New York : Feminist Press, 2012. -- 157 p. : ill.
; 23 cm. -- Summary (from publisher via OCLC): "At its
core, Spit and Passion is about the transformative moment
when music crashes into a stifling adolescent bedroom and
saves you. Suddenly, you belong. At twelve years old,
Cristy C. Road is struggling to balance tradition in a
Cuban Catholic family with her newfound queer identity, and
begins a chronic obsession with the punk band Green Day. In
this stunning graphic biography, Road renders the clash
between her rich inner world of fantasy and the numbing
suburban conformity she is surrounded by. She finds solace
in the closet--where she lets her deep excitement about
punk rock foment, and finds in that angst and euphoria a
path to self-acceptance." -- Autobiographical, about rock

respuestas." -- Abstract: Practically unknown abroad and
regrettably forgotten in its homeland, 'Don Sabino' by
Rafael Fornés Collado was one of the most attractive comics
to have been created and published in Cuba in the years
1957-1963. The depth and inspiration of the work are
clearly to be seen in 'Notes of a Cartoonist' and
'Interview with Sabino Fornés,' published in the now
impossible to find January-August 1876 issue of Signos, the
stimulating Santa Clara magazine edited by Samuel Feijóo.
Because of their great interest, we present these materials
here again, which Fornés has wanted to revise, correct and
complete with new observations for this edition. We
attribute their authorship to him alone, since, as he has
told us, the interview was only an expedient format and he
wrote both the questions and the answers himself. --

entonces." -- Abstract: "The efforts of Victor Patricio de
Landaluze (a.k.a Bayaceto, a.k.a. Don Junipero) in the
satiric magazines of 19th century Spanish Cuba stand out
from the rest in the contemporary illustrated press. He was
a pioneer in forging new forms and a new medium with his
caricatures and cartoons. He presented the first sequences
of images that could be considered comics. These primitive
comics of Bayaceto, from 1857, were satirical but they also
tried to present urban romantic adventures, and to make
theater and opera easier for people. These comics helped

193-228 in Revista Latinoamericana de Estudios sobre la
   Historieta, v. 3, no. 12 (Diciembre 2003).
-- Abstract: "El Pitarre was the magazine which in 1960
started a radical renewal within Cuban caricature. Its
appearance was a break from the conventions which had been
present in Cuban caricature sinces its appearance in the
19th century, and which had remained more or less the same
until the first half of the 20th century. Only beginning in
the 1950s were such artists as Jesús de Armas and Rafael
Fornés influenced by important figures of international
graphic humor like André François and Steinberg. It was
Rafael Fornés, specifically, who in 1960 became founder and
director of El Pitirre. In the new magazine the esthetic
revolution of caricature joined the political revolution
which the country had been immersed in since 1959." --

Abstract: "The weekly El Pitirre (1960-1961) brought
together an important sector of avant-garde graphic humor
in Cuba. Famous caricaturists like René de la Nuez, Chago
Armada, José Luis Posada and Rafael Fornés appeared on its
pages. The aesthetic renewal which this publication implied
was sharply curtailed by its disappearance, partly because
of incomprehension of its avant-gardist language. Two years

that were probably the high point of authentic revolution
in Cuban cartooning." -- Abstracts as published with the

twentieth-century's most repressive political regimes. Set
against a backdrop of world-changing events during the
headiest years of the Cuban Revolution, Goodbye, My Havana
follows young Connie Veltfort as her once relatively
privileged life among a community of anti-imperialist
expatriates turns to progressive disillusionment and
heartbreak. The consolidation of Castro's position brings
violence, cruelty, and betrayal to Connie's doorstep. And
the crackdown that ultimately forces her family and others
to flee for their lives includes homosexuals among its
targets--Connie's coming-of-age story is one also about the
dangers of coming out. Looking back with a mixture of

Adaptations of Pelleas & Melisande ; Salome ; Ein
Heldentraum ; Cavalleria Rusticana / by P. Craig Russell.
-- New York : Nantier, Beall, Minoustchine Pub., 2004. --
   140 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The P. Craig Russell
Library of Opera Adaptations ; v. 3) -- Summary (from
publisher via OCLC): "This final book in its series adapts
Pelléas & Mélisande, Salome, Ein Heldentraum and
Cavallieria Rusticana, introducing each opera with an
educational text on the work and its author. The first,
Pelléas & Mélisande, tells the story of a girl whom readers
meet weeping in a forest, and the ensuing love triangle
between her and brothers Pelléas and Golaud, which destroys
them all. Russell's new interpretation of the metaphysical
fantasies of Maeterlinck and Debussy is ravishing. The
beautiful illustrations and dream-like colors (evoking
light, sea and stars) make this tortured story of love and
grief even more epic. The short Ein Heldentraum is a single
song, and Russell's art and coloring provide a unique
reinterpretation of the lyrics and add an additional layer
of meaning. Cavallieria Rusticana ("The Godfather's Code")
is another story of cuckoldry; it contrasts vengeance with
the sunny rebirth of an Easter morning. Lastly, Salome,
based on the Oscar Wilde play, decadently contrasts
spiritual and physical virtue. Russell channels Aubrey
Beardsley's original illustrations while giving the story
his own spin. His ambitious plan to adapt the great works
of opera into comics form is audacious, but his flowing,
poetic lines and fanciful colors are an art in and of
themselves." -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6727.R85P203
