The Countess in Red / Leopold von Sacher Masoch ; adapted by J.M. Lo Duca and Georges Pichard ; translation by Jacinthe Leclerc. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1994. -- 48 p. : ill. ; 31 cm. -- (Eurotica) -- "Adults only." -- About: Báthory Erzsébet (1560-1614). -- Erotic genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.P5C6 1994

Summary: In Vienna in 1611, the Hungarian countess Erzsebet Bathory remains beautiful after age 50, and rumor has it that she bathes in blood to perserve her youth. A young man named Emmerich Kemen becomes fascinated by her and seeks her company. He learns that she enjoys the cruel torture of those in her power. Though the torture itself revolts him, this somehow makes the Countess even more attractive to Emmerich. When she invites him to her castle in Hungary, he eagerly accepts. On the way to the castle, Emmerich meets Koleman de Perusits, who is taking his daughter Isabelle to live with Countess Erzsebet. Koleman isn't quite comfortable doing this, but the Countess is known to take in girls from the impoverished nobility. When they arrive at the castle, scenes of torture are common. Emmerich meets a girl named Gisele, and falls half in love with her, though still fascinated by the Countess. The Countess sees Gisele and Emmerich together, and on the night of the full moon Gisele disappears. Isabelle is suspicious that Gisele has been killed. She tells Emmerich, and contacts her brother, who gives her a rope ladder to put out her window on the next full moon. When the night comes, Isabelle is invited to join the Countess in her bath, but she refuses. The next night, Emmerich is selected instead. Erzsebet explains her monthly baths in blood to him, then bleeds him. Koleman, Isabelle's father, breaks in and captures her, though it is too late for Emmerich. Instead of a trial, the authorities question the Countess by torture. They find that she has killed 610 people, and sentence her to be walled up in a tower. She lasts for three years before she dies.
