schools, he established several schools in Bengal,
particularly for girls. He simplified Bengali to make it
easy for the common man. He is thus regarded as the father

"The Lost Drakkar" 10 p. -- Summary: A Viking ship searching for a new land is lost in a storm, and the crew is ready to sacrifice their leader to the gods Aegir and Thor for deliverance. At the last minute the fog lifts and they are miraculously delivered home, to a calm fjord of Norland, where they find a baby in a floating buoy. They name the baby Thorgal Aegirsson.

"The Metal that Did Not Exist" 20 p. -- Summary: Nidhogg the Serpent beats Ivaldir, Father of all Dwarfs, at checkers. Ivaldir loses, and must forfeit his name, unless within a thousand years he can produce a gem made from a metal that does not exist. Tahdji, the youngest dwarf, is sent to look for the metal and he looks for 999 years and a fraction without success until he happens upon the young Thorgal, who is about six years old. Thorgal has a shiny thing on a string around his neck, that came from the buoy he was found in as a baby. The metal is unfamiliar, and Tahdji suggests it may have come from the stars. Thorgal offers to help, and they set out for the land of dwarfs. They are saved from a giant by flying cats, then attacked by vampire serpents (flying snakes with bat wings who shoot venom), and at the last minute are attacked by the tails of the serpent Nidhogg himself. Tahdji makes it past the tails to present the gem and save the day, but Thorgal is killed. The goddess Frigg shows up and gives Thorgal his life back, and he awakes in the Viking village as if from a dream, to learn that a baby has been born with a pearl in each fist. Her father is Gandalf the Mad, and her name is Aaricia.

"The Talisman" 16 p. -- Summary: Thorgal makes a pilgrimage at age 10, through a burned forest to the site of a space shuttle landing where his telepathic grandfather, Xargos, has been waiting to tell him about his origins. A 'talisman' that was found with Thorgal as a baby is actually a memory disc, and the grandfather gives him a reader. Thorgal learns about an earlier civilization of humans returning to Earth, and divided about whether they should use their technology and more developed mental powers to become gods to the current low-technology human civilizations. After playing the disc, Xargos removes all knowledge of his origins and special powers from Thorgal's mind. Thorgal wakes up near his village and notices that his talisman is missing.

   p. 1-31 in Amar Chitra Katha, no. 673 (1975, 2010
printing). -- (Epics & Mythology) -- Summary from back
cover: "With Shiva and Vishnu as parents, a child's life is
bound to be unusual. Ayyappan's courage is unlimited and
his wisdom unmatched. Vicious tigresses fall under his
spell just as avenging demons succumb to his divine
strength. Only power-crazed human beings are foolish enough
to try to destroy this extraordinary lad. But, as he
ascends to his rightful place as the god of Shabarimala,
the glow of Ayyappan's compassion makes even earthly riches
lose their glitter." -- Call no.: PN6790 .I54A5no.673

-- English summary (from p. 151): "In
the Land of Happy Children. Guibert also has a career as a
scriptwriter for children's comic books. He writes the
series Sardine de l'Espace (artwork by Sfar) and Ariol (for

-- English summary (from p. 127): "The
Childhood of Art. From Cham to Hergé, from Caran d'Ache to
Winsor McCay, from Greg to Blutch and Lewis Trondheim, many
comic authors have produced voluntarily clumsy drawings,
most often official attributed to young children. Thierry
