Cases from the Files of Sam Pezzo, P.I.

Cases from the Files of Sam Pezzo, P.I. / Vittorio Giardino ; translated by Tom Leighton. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1987. -- 48 p. : ill. ; 28 cm. -- "Book 1". -- Published in French as: Shit City. -- Detective genre. -- Call no.: PN6767.G5S4713 1987

"The Jockey Rides" p. 3-16 -- Summary: Sam Pezzo needs work, and gets a job collecting debts. It doesn't go well, and when he gets down the list to a jockey named Rino Salvi, he gets a gun pulled on him. The boss says try again, and sets up a meeting at the racetrack, where Sam is soon tied up with a young woman named Terri Wang. It seems the man Sam saw was not Rino Salvi, but part of a racing mafia also looking for Salvi. They've kidnapped Terri and Sam to try to get information about Salvi. The gang lets them escape so they can follow them, and Terri leads them straight to his hideout. Rino had been throwing races for the gang's profit, but had begun to manipulate races for his own profit. In the gunfight, Rino is wounded and Terri is killed.

"Shit City 1" p. 17-37 -- Summary: Lia Wang, Terri's sister, and their cousin Lin, come to Sam's office on family business. They take Sam to their patriarch, who wants him to find Terri's killers, and assigns Lia to monitor his progress. While the mob kills Salvi in the hospital, Sam visits a harmless dandy named Carmella for a tip on Salvi. Returning to Sam's apartment, the mafia is waiting to question them about an accomplice that has the money Salvi was supposed to have won. Next the Wang house is trashed by the mafia, and the grandfather beaten. Lia reveals that she is the accomplice, and Sam walks away from her. Carmella calls Sam to set up a meeting, and it's a trap. Carmella is actually the mafia boss. The Wang family arrives too, and the killers of Terri are killed as they try to kill Sam. Carmella gets away.

"Shit City 2" p. 38-48 -- Summary: Sam gets kidnapped and dumped out in the country, while Carmella is killed using Sam's gun. When Sam gets back to town both the police and the mafia are after him. Lia's uncle Yin takes him in. Sam figures out that it was Yin who had Carmella killed, after Lia sets Sam up to be killed. When that doesn't work, Lia gets Yin to write a confession so Sam can clear himself, and she lets them both go.
