The Bloody Lotus

The Bloody Lotus / Michetz [and] Bosmans ; translated by Dick Hansom. -- New York : Catalan Communications, 1990. -- 48 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- (Kogaratsu ; 1) -- (Comcat Comics) -- Setting: Japan. -- Call no.: PN6747.B6K6 1990

Summary: It is the year 1610, and Mitsuru is haunted by dreams of his dead brother, Yoshida. Twelve years earlier, Mitsuru treacherously killed Yoshida and took over Hoso-e Province. Now the Emperor's niece is coming to visit, and because of his dream Mitsuru realizes the seven samurai he sent as an escort will not be enough, and sends another hundred to catch up with them. One of the original escort is killed by an archer leaving the sign of a bloody lotus. Reaching the home of Yemitsu, the remaining six make fun of him because he was a former follower of Yoshida who has pledged to Mitsuru. They are confronted by young Kogaratsu for their insults. Kogaratsu's father was killed with Yoshida, but Kogaratsu's master is now Yemitsu. Yemitsu defuses the situation, and the samurai stay the night. Leaving four behind as a rear guard, two samurai go the border and take charge of the princess. When the two return with the princess and her entourage, all four of the samurai have been slain by "The Blood Lotus." Changing plans for security reasons, the company crosses a lake on ships instead of going around it. A storm comes up and The Blood Lotus meets them in a small boat, and soon very little is left of the group. The Blood Lotus reveals his identity to the Princess Ishi, and then sends her to safety alone in her ship. She believes in his loyalty to her and the Shogun, and keeps his secret. That night, Yemitsu figures out that Kogaratsu is The Blood Lotus, and the surviving leader of the original seven samurai figures out the The Blood Lotus must be a member of Yemitsu's household. Yemitsu reveals to Kogaratsu that the son of Yoshida, Kishiji Bando, is alive and hiding with Yemitsu as a peasant, though he is fifteen years old and has received proper martial training. There would have been an orderly uprising if Kogaratsu hadn't meddled. The samurai sends carrier pigeons to tell Mitsuru about the Blood Lotus, and Yemitsu, intercepting one, realizes he must flee with the son of Yoshida to the border. Mitsuru's hundred samurai pursue, and Yemitsu's peasants form a barricade on a bridge. The battle is hard-fought, with the help of the Blood Lotus, but finally he is cornered, the face-mask is removed, and the Blood Lotus is seen to be Yemitsu himself. The gate at the border is heavily fortified, but Kogaratsu sneaks in, then fights his way to the powder magazine, blows it up, and opens the gate for Bando to ride to safety.
