The Black Globe

 The Black Globe / V. Segrelles ; translation by Elizabeth Bell & Michael Koch. -- New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 1994. -- 45 p. : col. ill. ; 28 cm. -- (The Mercenary) -- Call no.: PN6777.S4 B5513 1994

Summary: Claust has found a weapon of light in an abandoned castle, and manages to mount it on an armored ship. The ray can be directed, and cuts through or heats to explosion everything it touches, except a mysterious black substance that surrounds it. Researching the subject in the monks' library, Nan-Tay and The Mercenary find that if the weapon sinks into the sea it will boil the water, destroy the whole country, and create so many clouds that an ice age will begin. Researching the subject further, they find a source of more of the material, on an island in the mid-Atlantic. There they find a fully Egyptian architecture and writing, lots of mummies (which Nan-Tay is frightened of), and some pieces of the black globe material. A big monster attacks them, they get locked in by age-old traps for grave-robbers, and a giant child helps them escape. Returning to the country of clouds, Nan-Tay distracts the enemy and The Mercenary uses a submarine invented by Arnoldo Da Vinci to get under and into Claust's ship. They kill the guards and plug the hole in his black globe with their little piece of the material. Once the ray is thus confined it is about to explode, but they are able to fly it to a "deep crack in the northern moors" for the event. The explosion yields a shock wave, fallout, and a mushroom cloud.

Black Hole, high school students mutate as a result of a
sexually transmitted disease. Contrasting the topos of
positive mutation in superhero comics by Marvel or DC,
Burns shows mutations as mere deformity that cannot be
employed in any aesthetic or even reasonable sense. Burns'
criticical reflection depicts the transition to adulthood
and puberty as a group's monstrous transformation, while
thematising the limits between reality and fantasy,

Black Images in the Comics--Miscellanea.
Icon, Representation and Virtuality in Reading the Graphic
   Narrative / by David Steiling. -- 291 leaves : ill. ; 28
cm. -- Thesis (Ph.D.) University of South Florida.
Department of English, 2006. -- Includes bibliographical
references (leaves 280-284). -- Abstract (used with
   permission): "Icon," "representation," and "virtuality,"
are key elements to consider when reading multi-modal
narratives, including graphic narratives. By considering in
detail how these elements are realized in various examples,
the author shows how the study of the comics can lay
groundwork for critical reading across the technological
continuum of storytelling. The author looks at how icon,
representation, and virtuality interact in a reading of
William Hogarth's A Harlot's Progress. He then examines
each term in more detail through readings of a variety of
graphic narratives including Max Ernst's Une Semaine de
Bonte, Winsor McCay's Little Nemo in Slumberland, Kurt
Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions, Craig Thompson's
Blankets, Phoebe Gloeckner's Diary of a Teenage Girl, and
Posy Simmonds's Gemma Bovery. The author distinguishes
between two types of virtuality, internal and external, and
ties the construction of virtuality to reader response
theory. In exploring issues related to the icon, the author
builds on Scott McCloud's conjecture that the iconic
character is the means through which the reader inhabits
the virtual space of the graphic story. The author advances
the proposition that icons are metonymies and that graphic
narratives are centered in metonymic, not metaphoric
devices. He also undertakes a discussion of how icon
operates within the expanding tradition of the "illustrated
novel." Throughout the dissertation an attempt is made to
express observation and analysis through continuous instead
of binary descriptors in order to emphasize the cooperative
rather than oppositional arrangements of word and image
within the graphic narrative. The dissertation concludes
with an extended examination of Will Eisner's contention
that the use of stereotype is a necessity in graphic
storytelling. Examples from Frederik Strömberg's Black
Images in the Comics are used to test this theory and
illustrate its consequences. The treatise finishes with an
analysis of approaches to representation that avoid
stereotypical treatment, are inclusive but sufficiently
flexible to operate through caricature. These observations
are applied to issues of characterization and
representation in electronic gaming narrative. The author
concludes that ethics, effectiveness, reputation and
empathy are all compromised when artists resort to
   stereotypes. -- Call no.: PN6725.S7515 2006

narrates the history of the character from his first
appearance in 1966--the same year, the Black Panther Party
was formed in Oakland, California--through Ta-Nehisi
Coates' version in 2015. It tells the story of how Black
and white writers envisioned the character between those
years, as a Patrice Lumumba to a Sidney Poitier to a Nelson
Mandela to a hip-hop cool to a reflective, 21st century
king. Along the way, the limitations of white liberalism
and the boundless nature of the Black imagination are
revealed. Marvel's Black Panther is the first textual study
of a superhero comic book character, examining its writers
and the stories they have created over a fifty year
   period." -- Call no.: PN6728.B544 Z5B8 2018

   York Review of Books, 2018. -- 109 p. : ill. ; 27 cm. --
Translation of: Nègres jaunes et Autres Créatures

Alagbé one of the most innovative and provocative artists
in the world of comics. In the stories gathered in Yellow
Negroes and Other Imaginary Creatures--drawn between 1994
and 2011, and never before available in English--he uses
stark, endlessly inventive black-and-white brushwork to
explore love and race, oppression and escape. It is both an
extraordinary experiment in visual storytelling and an
essential, deeply personal political statement. With
unsettling power, the title story depicts the lives of
undocumented migrant workers in Paris. Alain, a Beninese
immigrant, struggles to protect his family and his white
girlfriend, Claire, while engaged in a strange, tragic
dance of obsession and repulsion with Mario, a retired
French Algerian policeman. It is already a classic of
alternative comics, and, like the other stories in this

The Black Island

 The Black Island / Hergé ; translated by Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper and Michael Turner. -- London : Methuen, 1966. -- 62 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (The Adventures of Tintin) -- English translation of L'Île Noire -- Call no.: PN6747.H4T52513 1966

Summary: Tintin offers help to the crew of an unregistered airplane that has made an emergency landing, and is shot for his trouble. He's not too badly hurt, and while Thompson and Thomson are visiting him in the hospital they learn that a plane has crashed in Eastdown, Sussex. On the train to the channel ferry two men frame Tintin as a thief and Thompson and Thomson arrest him. Tintin escapes just in time to catch the ferry. Once in England, the two men and another named Ivan capture Tintin and try to make him jump off the cliffs of Dover, but Snowy saves him by releasing and provoking a goat. Tintin finds the plane wreck, and the scraps of a note for a clue, and Snowy finds a bone. The clue leads him to the estate of Dr. J. W. Müller, which Tintin starts to investigate. Snowy is saved from a guard dog by his bone, but Tintin is then caught in a steel trap. Müller works in a mental institution where patients are treated so they become insane, rather than the usual other way around. As Tintin is struggling to escape, Müller's house is set on fire. Tintin is trapped inside unconscious while the local fire department searches for the key to the firehouse. Tintin is finally rescued because of Snowy's persistence with the firemen, but Müller escapes. The next morning Tintin returns to the burnt down house and discovers a triangle of red lights intended to guide air pilots. Tintin lights the beacons, and a plane drops bags of forged banknotes. Müller and Ivan return to retrieve the shipment and Tintin ties them up. They escape in their car. Tintin and Snowy hitch a ride with some campers, and experience a wreck in their runaway camper trailer. Soon Tintin and Snowy jump from a footbridge onto a train carrying Müller, who sees them and detaches the coaches, escaping on the locomotive. Tintin and Snowy then follow on a freight train, riding on a leaky tank car of Scotch whiskey. Snowy gets drunk, and leads Tintin to a pub where they find Müller, Ivan, Thompson and Thomson. After an airplane chase, Tintin and Snowy crash land in Scotland, and the the next day hear that the wreckage of Müller's plane has been found near Kiltoch. The locals say the beast of the Black Island has gotten the occupants of the plane. Tintin goes to explore the ruined castle of Craig Dhui on the island, and finds a ferocious gorilla who is, however, afraid of Snowy. They also find Müller, Ivan, and a printing press making counterfeit money. The police come and round up the gang, and Tintin says goodbye to the gorilla at the Glasgow zoo.
