Arzach

A series of fantasy stories by Moebius (Jean Giraud). The four main Arzach stories are without words, and were first presented to English-speaking readers in the first four issues of Heavy Metal in April through July of 1977. As they had done two years earlier in the French magazine Métal Hurlant, these stories stories established a feeling that something new was happening in French comics, and in world comics. There have been three separately published editions of Arzach in English (as listed here), and in addition a reprinting of the 1987 edition forms the middle third of a limited edition called Moebius 1, published by Graphitti Designs in 1988. A series of six tribute portfolia and an English-language tribute volume appeared in 1992 and 1993, and an English "novelization" of the wordless comic appeared in 2000.

Giraud, Jean. Arzach / Moebius. -- New York : Heavy Metal, 1977. -- 64 p. : ill. (part col.) ; 28 cm. -- (A Heavy Metal Book) -- Call no.: PN6747.G5A713
"Arzach" 8 p. -- Summary: Arzach the reptile-rider flies by a window and sees a beautiful woman partially nude. Above her on the roof a man shakes his fist at Arzach. Arzach ropes the man and hangs him from the backbone of a large skeleton. Returning to the woman, Arzach finds her face unappealing, and flies away. Story without words, that first appeared in English in Heavy Metal, no. 1 (Apr. 1977). Also printed in Moebius 2: Arzach and Other Stories (Epic Comics, 1987), and in Arzach (Dark Horse Comics, 1996).

"Harzak" 8 p. -- Summary: The reptile-rider is flying above a field of tentacles when his pack reptile falls and is absorbed. The other reptile seems tired so Harzak gives him a cookie. They come to an arch where a gorilla-like creature prevents them from resting. They trick it into falling off into the tentacles. As the sun goes down Harzak has a safe perch for the night. Story without words, that first appeared in English in Heavy Metal, no. 2 (May 1977). Also printed in Moebius 2: Arzach and Other Stories (Epic Comics, 1987), and in Arzach (Dark Horse Comics, 1996).

"Arzak" 8 p. -- Summary: A repairman drives to a remote edifice, and makes his way through a yard of hostile men, to fix something that causes Arzak's repitile to function again. Story without words, that first appeared in English in Heavy Metal, no. 3 (June 1977). Also printed in Moebius 2: Arzach and Other Stories (Epic Comics, 1987), and in Arzach (Dark Horse Comics, 1996).

"Harzakc" 8 p. -- Summary: Harzakc looks in a window at a partially naked woman, then flies over a horde of armed men and monsters, then goes into a building or ship of some kind for a meeting. Story without words, that first appeared in English in Heavy Metal, no. 4 (July 1977). Also printed in Moebius 2: Arzach and Other Stories (Epic Comics, 1987), and in Arzach (Dark Horse Comics, 1996).

"Harzack" 2 p. black & white. -- Summary: A character urinates on the ground, and police arrive and attempt to arrest him; urine engulfs the police car and the character runs behind a large rock, where another character is defecating. Also appears in Moebius 0 (Dark Horse Comics, 1990).

"Metamorphosis" 24 p. -- Summary: Wordless sequence in full-page panels, in a style that suggests flip animation. A man's face and hand explode with a substance that engulfs him, hardens into a hollow egg-like object, and shatters revealing another man. The story is untitled here, but appears with this title in Moebius 0 (Dark Horse Comics, 1990).
