Aria Takes Off

Aria Takes Off / M. Weyland. -- Norfolk, Va. : Donning Co., 1986. 46 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. -- (Aria ; 1) -- Translation of: Aria 1: La Fugue d'Aria. -- Fantasy genre. -- Call no.: PN6747.W4F813 1986

Summary: Lord Suryam sends a man to another lord to borrow a military advisor, and the man comes back with a woman named Aria. Suryam is furious, but she beats up his personal guards, so he gives her a chance. Suryam's current military advisor, Stapp, assigns his ten laziest men to Aria and gives her a month to make soldiers out of them. Aria begins the task in full armor and with a concealing helmet, so they won't know she's a woman. Just before the training period is over, Aria gets orders to attack Galbeck, Suryam's encroaching, power-hungry enemy. Aria and her men are ambushed in the field by some of Stapp's men, and it turns out the orders were faked. Still, Galbeck turns up by coincidence, so after dealing with the ambush Aria and her ten soldiers follow Galbeck to his fort. Taking the oldest soldier and an orphan boy she's rescued, Aria dresses as a woman and gets refuge in the fort. She has prepared herself with a paste of a plant that causes a delayed allergic reaction, and has soon convinced Galbeck and his men that they have been exposed to a seriously contagious disease. The old soldier then proclaims himself a doctor and prescribes a week of fasting and bed rest. After a few days, Aria throws a paper airplane of instructions to her other nine men, and lets them into the fort. Together they make short work of the enemy. Galbeck is captured and taken back to Lord Suryam. All this time Stapp has been calling Aria a deserter, but when she arrives with Galbeck a prisoner and shows the faked orders to Suryam, all is well. Galbeck and Stapp were childhood friends planning to share power. Aria is invited to stay, but she takes off with the little boy, and with her ten soldiers following her like puppies.

The Three Stars of Ingaar / Léturgie & Philippe Luguy. --
   Fantasy Flight Publishing, 1996. -- 48 p. : col. ill. ; 29
cm.-- (Percevan) -- Translation of: Les Trois Étoiles
   d'Ingaar. -- Fantasy. -- Summary: A storyteller tells how
the legendary Ingaar struck his sword on a stone and
produced three powerful gems. On his death they were
dispersed, but whoever finds them and puts them back in
Ingaar's crown will gain wealth and power. Baron Deadstone
consults the wizard Zenzarael, who confirms the truth of
the story and suggests that the Knight Percevan may have
one of the stones. Deadstone and his assistant Polemic
sneak into the bedroom where Percevan and Blanche Stonefire
are sleeping and steal Percevan's ring. Using his magic on
the gem, Zenzarael is able to determine who has the other
two stones. Percevan's friend Kervin figures out who took
Percevan's stone, and they head for Deadstone's castle.
Zenzarael casts a spell to delay Percevan, which involves
his falling into the hands of the dark, evil and seductive
Balkis and her assistant Shyloc'h. Kervin and Balkis'
blonde, good sister Ariel rescues them. Percevan learns
from Zenzarael that Deadstone will be heading north to the
Land of Ingvaar to get the crown to put his jewels in.
While he's talking to the wizard, the wizard's cat
Belphegor scratches Percevan, and that night in an inn
Percevan loses consciousness. Deadstone, though he doesn't
have the crown yet, figures he's through with the wizard,
and imprisons him. As revenge the wizard sends Balkis to
heal Percevan. To be continued. -- Call no.: PN6747.F3T713
