Anarcoma

Anarcoma / written and illustrated by Nazario ; English translation by David H. Rosenthal. -- New York: Catalan Communications, 1983. -- 62 p. : ill. ; 29 cm. -- Call no.: PN6777.N3A8 1983

Note: Three separate introductions begin the album, written by Onliyu, by Alberto Cardín, and by Ludolfo Paramio. The first of these covers something of the publishing history of the Anarcoma character, which began in a Spanish pornographic magazine, then moved to the comic book El Víbora. All three writers address the subcultural setting, in which homosexuality is the norm and the transvestite night life of Barcelona is lovingly depicted. A six page cast of characters is also presented as front matter, since the story is a complex mystery and since some of the characters change clothes so often.

Summary: Anarcoma breaks off sex with Jake when she gets a call for help. Professor Onliyu's machine has been stolen and Captain Seahorse's gang is suspected of the crime. Onliyu is a prominent Spanish comics writer who plays himself in the story, though in the related occupation of Mad Scientist. Anarcoma proceeds to ask Cathy, a queen who sells cigarettes in a big men's restroom, what she knows. Meanwhile Onliyu has called the police and is screaming and beating the floor in his bathrobe. Cathy doesn't have much to tell, except that a lot of people already know about the theft. On the street, Anarcoma realizes she is being followed, then looks back to see her tail being knocked out and dragged away by Captain Seahorse's men, in a case of mistaken identity. Turning around again, Anarcoma is held up at gunpoint by Seahorse's moll Ruby. Humphrey, Anarcoma's old army buddy and a family man who rarely sees his family, knocks Ruby out, and they figure that Captain Seahorse doesn't have the machine or he wouldn't be so interested. Anarcoma then knocks Humphrey out, goes to spy on Seahorse, and falls through a trap door on his yacht. Two guards are assigned to watch her, and they get excited reading a dirty comic book making it easy for her to seduce them. Two or three hours later, she bites the penis off one of the guards and makes an escape. Anarcoma returns to Jake, figuring he must have tipped off Captain Seahorse. She kills Jake, and gives the body to Cathy to play with. Seahorse gets a tip that a drag queen named Peggy might know something about the machine, and sends Blondy, a Tom of Finland type, to hang around Peggy. A hooded group called the Knights of Saint Repressit has killed Peggy's friend Dusty thinking he had the machine, but he must have given it to Peggy. Humphrey and Anarcoma also figure out the Peggy connection, independently. Jake starts to stink in Cathy's apartment, so they put him in the garbage. Anarcoma gets a job performing in Peggy's drag club, and after the show Blondy goes home with Peggy and Anarcoma comes along too. The next morning Peggy finds Anarcoma in the shower with Blondy, and in jealousy she puts a package in an abandoned church and tells them it's the machine. Blondy gets the package, while Anarcoma watches from the shadows, but before he can leave the church Blondy is knocked over by a robot named XM2, who speeds away with the package on a motor scooter. The package turns out to contain a hot plate. The next day Anarcoma returns to Peggy's apartment, and finds her dead at the hands of XM2. Soon Anarcoma is talking to Humphrey in a cafe when a man runs by, leaves a package with a blind vendor, and is almost immediately shot down and killed. Later in a hangout with Nazario, Anarcoma learns that if one pushes the button in XM2's navel, the robot will obey any command. Humphrey goes to Peggy's apartment, and is arrested for her murder. Anarcoma goes back to the church and finds another package she suspects Peggy may have hidden. XM2 shows up and demands the package, but she pushes his button and he demonstrates his sexual functions instead. Then she orders him to take her to his boss, and it's two competing professors, the Jones brothers, who recognize immediately that this is a fake machine. They send XM2 out to dispose of the fake machine, telling him to hurry back because they're horny, but Anarcoma pushes his button and they return the package to the church, and Anarcoma takes XM2 home, calling him "the stud of my life." After a few days, however, Anarcoma gets tired of XM2 and lends him to Cathy. Blondy goes to hide a package in the church as a trap for Anarcoma, but finds another package already there and assumes it's the real one. He is shot and killed on the spot by two other people, who are shot and killed on the spot by four other people, who are apprehended forthwith by the police, who give the machine to Onliyu, who says it's a fake. Blondy and the four captives are Captain Seahorse's men, so the Seahorse gang is now out of the picture, but the other two killed in the church were from the Knights of Saint Repressit, which immediately assigns more operatives. Next we learn that the fake machine was created by Metamorphosina, whose group the One-Eyed Piranhas is also responsible for killing the mystery man who gave his package to the blind man. The parties focus on that lead, and Anarcoma follows the blind man to find out where he lives. Turning a trick to get some quick cash, Anarcoma finds a date book in his pocket with interesting notes in it. It turns out he's an operative of the Knights of Saint Repressit, and Anarcoma soon has him in her power, and learns that the Knights had also put out a phony machine to mislead people. Meanwhile Cathy is sharing XM2 with the whole community, until he turns up missing. While the Jones Brothers are busily making a new robot and fighting over whether he should be brunette or blonde, a news reporter tells us all we know about the purpose of the actual machine: "humanity is in danger if his machine to control the sex drive falls into the wrong hands." Soon packages that might be the professor's machine turn up in a couple of bathrooms around the city. Humphrey, an amateur detective, takes the job of finding XM2, which he does by tracking down all of Cathy's friends that knew about him. Humphrey learns that a certain Miss Chinche had sampled XM2's charms at Cathy's, but hasn't been seen for days. Comparing notes, Anarcoma goes to Chinche's and Humphrey goes to check out the blind man's apartment. Humphrey sees One-Eyed Piranhas leaving the apartment with a package. When the package gets to Metamorphosina, it also proves to contain a fake machine. At Chinche's apartment, Chinche is dead but XM2 is there. Anarcoma pushes his button and promises never to leave him again.
