The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck

The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck : the First American Comic Book / a cura de Alfredo Castelli ; prefazione di Robert L. Beerbohm. -- Napoli : Edizioni Napoli Comicon, 2003. -- 44 p. : ill. ; 30 cm. -- The main work included here is a translation of Les Amours de Mr. Vieux Bois, from French to English, with apparatus in Italian and English. -- At head of title: Rodolphe Töpffer presents. -- Title from cover. -- Reprinted, and partly reconstructed, from a supplement to the magazine Brother Jonathan published in 1842. -- Caption title: The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck. -- Call no.: NC1659.T6713 2003

Summary: Mr. Oldbuck sees a woman, falls in love, and can't get her out of his mind. He writes to her, and she doesn't answer, so he tries to commit suicide with his sword, which he is not successful in doing. He tries again, first talking to the lady (she is uninterested) and then another unsuccessful suicide by hanging. Oldbuck buys a horse, and is thrown from it at a spot where he can see his lady talking to another man. He vanquishes this rival with his sword, then declares his passion to her parents. They approve of him, so he returns home and dances for joy until he is thrown in jail for rioting. The parents call it off. Oldbuck drinks soup, thinking it is hemlock, and does not die. He decides to travel, but is soon robbed, and becomes a monk. The monk's life doesn't suit him, so he dresses as a woman to escape. He finds his own clothes, and his horse which hasn't been fed in a fortnight. He fattens up the horse until it explodes, then goes home to find a letter from his lady. They try to elope, but they are captured by the monks and put in separate cells. Oldbuck tries to commit suicide by jumping out the window, but gets hung up /on a sundial. The couple escape, a wedding is planned, but because he has to take care of his dog he is late to the church and his fiancée and her parents have left. Oldbuck tries to commit suicide by throwing himself into the canal. Thieves find him and steal his clothes, leaving him for dead. The police find him naked and have him buried, but birds dig him up. He returns home in his winding sheet, is taken for a ghost, and goes to prison for causing a disturbance. Oldbuck escapes, and soon pulls his lady and her parents onto their roof through their chimney, while himself falling off the roof. The family is missing for days, stuck on the roof with Oldbuck's dog. Oldbuck is being sought by the police and the monks. A chimney sweep tells him about the family on the roof, and Oldbuck returns to the roof, but the family has gotten down and moved to another house. Oldbuck sits on the roof for eight days, and finally spots his lady love in a room in a house across the street. He crashes through her window, and they try to elope again. This time he takes her in a closed carriage. Soon Oldbuck is frightened by the sight of a monk. He manages to drop the body of the carriage in the road and run off without it. The carriage, with the lady still inside, is loaded on a stagecoach, then dropped in a river because of a traffic accident. Oldbuck's rival saves himself by climbing onto the floating carriage. The rival and the lady are getting along well when Oldbuck comes to rescue her. She has become thin, so he takes her to the mountains to drink milk and fatten up. They fall asleep on the way back to the city. The rival comes upon them and kidnaps the lady, still sleeping. Oldbuck follows and kidnaps her back. When they pass the monks, Oldbuck disguises himself as a miller, and his lady as a sack of flour. The disguise is not a success, and the monks capture them again and plan to burn them at the stake. They escape, and as the monks are in pursuit, Oldbuck leaves some money on the ground and hides with his lady in the carriage body, which has washed ashore. Two monks see the money and start digging a hole to hide it for themselves. Oldbuck sneaks up and buries them up to their necks in their own hole. Oldbuck leaves with his fatigued lady in a wheelbarrow. Oldbuck is tired, too, and the wheelbarrow gets away from him on a hill. The rival finds it, and starts pushing her away for himself. He falls asleep, however, and Oldbuck recovers the lady. Finally they have a wedding.
