Summary: Jonas Finkel starts a job as an apprentice in a brickyard at age thirteen. By 1955, three years later, he is apprenticed to a plumber who knows how to take it easy and work the system. The plumber, Slavek, becomes Jonas' friend. From plumbing, Jonas goes to work in a bookstore, where the owner, Mr. Pinkel, is sympathetic and remembers Jonas' father. Both Pinkel and Finkel are required by state security to give secret reports on each other, and they discuss the reports. Jonas' mother works hard in a factory, making barely enough to survive. Stalin has died, and Jonas' father can now get a letter every other month. In the bookstore, Jonas meets old friends who are still in school, and who read forbidden poetry. Jonas gets a crush on a girl named Tatiana.

Summary (from OCLC): With the Dalton Brothers behind bars,
Luke plans on getting a little rest. On returning to Daisy
Town, Luke finds out that the outlaw's mother Ma Dalton has
been robbing all the shopkeepers in the area. They have
been letting her get away with her crimes because they know
she is too proud to beg for charity. Luke and Ma Dalton
becomes friends and Luke is more or less adopted by Ma.
When Joe Dalton hears that his Ma has a new "son" he is
furious and breaks out of prison with his brothers. Joe is
chained to Bushwack, the "dumbest guard dog in the West" so
